Guwahati Airport Steps Up Winter Safety Infrastructure With Advanced Instrument Landing System

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati has commissioned a new 570-metre Precision Approach Lighting System (PALS), marking a significant upgrade to its approach and landing infrastructure, an official statement said on Tuesday. The airport, located in Borjhar, roughly 20 to 28 kilometres from Guwahati and Dispur in Assam, is operated by Adani Airports. The newly installed system is designed to provide pilots with enhanced visual references while approaching the runway, particularly during periods of low visibility, and represents one of the airport's most notable safety upgrades in recent years.

Guwahati experiences pronounced seasonal weather challenges, including heavy monsoon rainfall and periods of reduced visibility that have historically affected flight operations at the airport. The new PALS extends the airport's approach lighting from the earlier 180 metres to 570 metres, more than tripling its previous range and enabling significantly earlier runway acquisition for arriving aircraft. This extended lighting corridor is intended to give pilots additional time and visual guidance as they descend toward the runway, particularly in conditions where fog, haze or heavy rain might otherwise obscure the runway environment until much later in the approach.

According to the statement, the upgraded system offers several operational benefits. It allows pilots to identify the runway environment sooner during approach, assists in maintaining correct alignment with the runway centre-line, and supports flight operations during adverse weather conditions. Officials said the enhancement strengthens the airport's capability to serve as a critical air transport hub for Northeast India, a region where LGBI Airport plays an outsized role in connecting Assam and neighbouring states to major destinations across the country and abroad.

The project involved extensive planning, installation, calibration, testing and commissioning carried out in compliance with applicable aviation safety and regulatory requirements. Officials noted that the lighting infrastructure, associated electrical systems and photometric performance were carefully engineered to ensure consistent and reliable guidance to aircraft throughout approach operations. The multi-stage process reflects standard practice for aviation infrastructure upgrades of this scale, where systems must be rigorously tested before being certified for operational use.

Airport officials said the initiative forms part of an ongoing programme to modernise airside infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and strengthen overall aviation safety standards at LGBI Airport. They added that improved operational continuity during periods of reduced visibility is expected to help minimise flight disruptions for passengers, while also supporting airlines through better schedule adherence and a reduction in diversion-related impacts caused by weather-related landing restrictions.

The commissioning of the 570-metre PALS is expected to further strengthen the airport's approach capability and contribute to safer, more dependable air connectivity for Assam and the wider Northeast region, an area that relies heavily on air travel given its challenging terrain and periodic weather disruptions. The upgrade adds to a broader set of infrastructure investments aimed at positioning Guwahati as a resilient and increasingly capable aviation gateway for the region.
