Gujarat Congress May be Wiped Out of Rajya Sabha for the First Time in History

The BJP's record 161 MLAs give it a lock on all four Gujarat Rajya Sabha seats on June 18.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to secure all four Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat in the upcoming elections scheduled for June 18, leveraging its overwhelming majority in the state Assembly. If the anticipated outcome materializes, it will mark the first time that the Congress will have no representation from Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha, reflecting the dramatic shift in the state's political landscape over recent years.

The elections are being held to fill four Upper House seats that are becoming vacant upon the completion of their incumbents' terms. With 161 legislators in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the BJP enjoys its highest-ever strength in the state legislature. The party's commanding numbers place it in a comfortable position to elect candidates to all four seats without facing any significant electoral challenge.

In contrast, the Congress currently has only 12 MLAs in the Assembly and lacks the numerical strength required to secure even a single Rajya Sabha seat. The party's declining presence in Gujarat politics has been evident over successive elections, and the upcoming Rajya Sabha contest is expected to further underscore its weakened position in the state. Political observers view the development as another indicator of the BJP's sustained dominance in Gujarat.

The Rajya Sabha election process relies on votes cast by elected members of the Legislative Assembly, making the Assembly's numerical composition a decisive factor. Given the BJP's substantial majority, the outcome is widely considered a formality unless unexpected political developments alter the equation before polling day. The election is expected to proceed smoothly with the ruling party maintaining complete control over the contest.

A clean sweep in the Rajya Sabha elections would further strengthen the BJP's representation in Parliament and reinforce its political hold over Gujarat. For the Congress, the prospect of losing its remaining foothold in the state's Upper House representation highlights the challenges it faces in rebuilding its organizational and electoral strength. The June 18 election is therefore being closely watched as both a parliamentary contest and a reflection of Gujarat's evolving political dynamics.
