Government Sources Say Centre Ready For NEET Paper Leak Debate

The Centre has reiterated its willingness to hold a detailed discussion in Parliament on the NEET paper leak controversy, even as the Opposition intensified its protests and renewed demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Government sources said the administration has acted promptly since the irregularities came to light and rejected the Opposition's demand for the minister's resignation, describing it as politically motivated. The issue is expected to remain a key focus during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

According to government sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described examination paper leaks as a "ghor paap" (grave sin) and stressed that protecting the future of students should remain a national priority. Addressing NDA Members of Parliament, the Prime Minister reportedly said the Centre and all state governments must work together to eliminate paper leaks, emphasising that the issue transcends political differences. He also urged lawmakers to remain closely connected with the public and work towards restoring the confidence of young people.

Sources further stated that the Prime Minister made it clear there should be no injustice to students and cautioned against misleading them during the ongoing controversy. The government has maintained that it is prepared for a comprehensive debate in Parliament on the issue, responding to repeated demands from the Opposition for a formal discussion on examination irregularities and reforms in the education system.

Highlighting the steps taken so far, government sources said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting an investigation into the alleged NEET paper leak. More than 13 accused have been arrested as part of the probe, and authorities have assured that those found responsible will face strict legal action. The Centre said these measures demonstrate its commitment to ensuring a transparent investigation and protecting the integrity of competitive examinations.

The developments come a day after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi led a protest outside the Prime Minister's residence over the alleged paper leak and police action against student protesters. Following his detention and subsequent release, Gandhi demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, action against police personnel accused of assaulting students, withdrawal of cases against protesters, an apology from the Prime Minister and immediate reforms to the education and examination systems.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has rejected the Opposition's allegations, accusing the Congress of politicising the issue instead of engaging in constructive debate. In a statement posted on social media, the minister said the government had already expressed its readiness for a comprehensive discussion in Parliament and alleged that the Opposition was prioritising political confrontation over finding solutions for students. With both sides standing by their positions, the NEET controversy is expected to dominate parliamentary proceedings in the coming days.
