Ghaziabad Sisters’ Suicide Linked to Phone Snatched Over Korean Culture Obsession

Three Ghaziabad sisters died by suicide after father confiscated phones to stop Korean culture obsession.

In a heartbreaking case shaking Uttar Pradesh, three minor sisters—Nishika (16), Prachi (14), and Pakhi (12)—plunged to their deaths from the ninth floor of their high-rise apartment in Ghaziabad's Bharat City Society earlier this week, leaving behind a chilling suicide note addressed solely to their father. Police investigations reveal the girls were gripped by depression after Chetan Kumar, their father, confiscated and sold their mobile phones, citing an unhealthy obsession with Korean culture that fueled excessive online gaming and virtual friendships with K-pop enthusiasts. Desperate on the night of the tragedy, they borrowed their mother's device but couldn't access their beloved apps, pushing them over the edge.

Authorities, led by DCP (Trans Hindon) Nimish Patil, have seized a phone from the scene and a nine-page pocket diary from the sisters' room, documenting their deep dive into Korean dramas, music idols like BTS and Blackpink, language apps, and fan communities—activities Kumar deemed addictive and disruptive to studies. Forensic experts found no trace of Korean apps on the mother's phone, with fingerprints from the handwritten note and messages now under lab analysis. Cyber units are tracking buyers via IMEI numbers to recover data, while police verify Kumar's account of purchasing one phone for Nishika three months prior and another for Prachi just 15 days ago.

The probe has unearthed startling family dynamics: Kumar lives with three "wives"—Sujata (Nishika's mother), Heena (Prachi and Pakhi's mother), and Tina—all biological sisters in a polygamous setup that reportedly sowed discord. Shockingly, the girls showed stronger loyalty to their father, omitting any maternal mention in their note, which police interpret as a cry for his understanding amid perceived restrictions. Adding layers of suspicion, Kumar's 2015 live-in partner died falling from a Rajendra Nagar Colony rooftop; initially probed as suspicious, it was closed as suicide.

Treated strictly as suicide pending forensic results, the case spotlights rising teen mental health crises tied to social media detachment, cultural fandoms, and unstable home environments. The sisters' Wednesday cremation at Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat closed a grim chapter, but questions linger over parental controls versus emotional neglect in modern Indian families. Police urge vigilance on digital addictions while probing all angles.
