Gaurav Gogoi Accuses Himanta Govt of Enrolling Outsiders to Manipulate Assam Voter Rolls
Gaurav Gogoi claims Himanta rigging 2026 polls.
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of orchestrating a systematic attempt to manipulate the state’s electoral rolls by illegally enrolling thousands of voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking at a party event in Dhubri, Gogoi declared that the ruling BJP, facing internal crises, was resorting to desperate measures to artificially inflate its voter base and distort the democratic mandate of Assam.
The allegations surfaced as the Election Commission commenced a special summary revision of electoral rolls with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date. Gogoi warned that the State Government was exploiting this routine exercise to insert names of outsiders, urging civil society, media, and opposition parties to maintain strict vigilance. He asserted that no external elements should be permitted to interfere with Assam’s electoral integrity or dilute the voice of its indigenous population.
Sharpening his attack, Gogoi described Himanta Biswa Sarma as the “biggest burden” on the BJP’s national leadership and claimed the Chief Minister was in deep political trouble. He alleged that Sarma had already approached AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal for covert support and predicted that AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi would soon campaign in Assam to consolidate minority votes in favour of the ruling dispensation.

In contrast, the Congress Leader projected unprecedented unity within the opposition. He revealed that eight parties, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Jatiya Dal–Asom, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference, have formally agreed to contest the 2026 elections as a coordinated front against the BJP. Gogoi expressed confidence that this broad alliance was significantly stronger and better prepared than previous efforts.
Declaring that the Congress was not merely aiming to increase its seat tally but to form the next government, Gogoi vowed to protect Assam’s identity and interests. The explosive charges have escalated political temperatures in the state, setting the stage for a fiercely contested battle over electoral rolls and demographic concerns in the run-up to the crucial 2026 polls.
