Fuel Crisis Looms Over Indian Aviation as ATF Price Impact Expected from April 1
The aviation minister warned airlines of rising ATF costs potentially impacting ticket prices from April.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has indicated that airlines could begin to feel the impact of rising fuel costs from April 1, as Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices are revised at the start of each month. The warning comes amid increasing pressure on the aviation sector due to volatile global crude oil prices.
Naidu said the government is closely monitoring the situation and is already in discussions with airlines to assess the potential fallout. He noted that ATF, the refined petroleum product used to power aircraft, typically accounts for 35 to 45 per cent of an airline’s operating costs, making it a critical factor influencing overall expenses.
Rising global crude prices—often driven by geopolitical tensions in oil-producing regions such as West Asia—have a direct impact on ATF rates. As a result, airlines may be forced to pass on the increased costs to passengers through higher fares or fuel surcharges. Several domestic carriers have already begun introducing such surcharges in anticipation of further price hikes.

The minister also emphasized the importance of maintaining safe and uninterrupted operations, particularly in regions affected by ongoing geopolitical instability. He added that the government is coordinating with multiple ministries to ensure stability in the aviation sector while balancing the financial challenges faced by airlines and the interests of passengers.
