Fadnavis Unveils Mega Plan to Fix Thane Traffic and Metro
CM pledges Metro, traffic, water, and infrastructure solutions.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday outlined a comprehensive action plan for Thane and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), promising to ease traffic congestion, fast-track Metro projects, and implement large-scale infrastructure improvements over the next five years. The announcement came during a televised discussion as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign ahead of the Thane Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for January 15.
Fadnavis emphasized that his government aims to complete all major Metro projects by 2030, while also integrating the Coastal Road into a “ring” network to divert heavy traffic outside city limits. To tackle congestion along Thane’s arterial Ghodbunder Road, he proposed the development of a “growth hub” at Kolshet-Diva, including the introduction of water taxi services to improve regional connectivity.
Addressing the long-standing water shortage in Thane and surrounding areas, Fadnavis assured residents that water scarcity would be resolved within three years. He highlighted the Poshir and Pelhar dams, which are expected to be completed in the next 36 months, and confirmed that the Gargai project has cleared environmental hurdles. Once fully operational, the Kalu Dam at Murbad will provide a permanent solution to water needs across the MMR, supplying an additional 500 million liters daily.

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sustainable development, Fadnavis announced that traditional dumping grounds would be phased out and replaced with bio-mining projects within the next three to four years. He also revealed plans for a specialised incubation centre in Thane to foster innovation, economic growth, and skill development in the region, emphasizing long-term, future-oriented planning.
On the political front, the CM defended the alliance with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, explaining that maintaining unity in Thane required the BJP to contest fewer seats. He urged voters to focus on a “service-first” approach in selecting representatives, prioritizing development and infrastructure over local political rivalries. Out of 131 TMC seats, the Shiv Sena is contesting 87, while the BJP is contesting 40, underscoring the strength of the Mahayuti alliance.
