Fadnavis Promised Madurai Metro Rail If BJP Wins, Says CM Stalin

CM Stalin accuses Fadnavis of tying Madurai metro rail promise to BJP’s electoral gains.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has sharply criticized former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his recent statements regarding the proposed metro rail project in Madurai. Stalin accused Fadnavis of attempting to politicize infrastructure development by linking the project’s execution to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) success in the upcoming Madurai South assembly elections.

Speaking at a public event in Madurai, Stalin said that promising the metro rail project in return for electoral support undermines democratic norms and exploits the aspirations of the city’s residents. He emphasized that developmental projects must be planned and executed based on need, feasibility, and proper governance, rather than used as election tools.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come in response to Fadnavis’s campaign comments suggesting that the metro project would be expedited if the BJP secured victory in the constituency. Stalin described such statements as “political opportunism,” warning against conditional promises that could mislead voters and disrupt long-term urban planning.

Madurai has long been discussing the implementation of a metro rail system to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion. The project has seen multiple feasibility studies and proposals over the years, but no formal execution plan has been finalized. Stalin’s remarks highlight the need for transparency and continuity in urban infrastructure planning, regardless of which party is in power.

Political analysts noted that the exchange signals growing competition in southern Tamil Nadu, where both the DMK and BJP are actively trying to consolidate support ahead of elections. The debate over the metro rail project has now become a focal point in local campaign narratives, reflecting the broader trend of infrastructure promises being leveraged in electoral politics.

Stalin concluded by urging political parties to prioritize genuine developmental initiatives over electioneering, asserting that citizens deserve consistent planning and execution of projects that benefit the public, rather than conditional commitments tied to political outcomes.
