'Evict Me By Force': Rabri Devi Refuses to Vacate Bihar Bungalow Allotted to NDA Minister

Rabri Devi refuses to vacate her Bihar bungalow allotted to an NDA cabinet minister.

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Bihar over the continued occupation of a government bungalow by former chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rabri Devi. The dispute intensified after the state government's Building Construction Department allotted the prominent residence at 10 Circular Road in Patna to Dairy and Fisheries Minister Nand Kishor Ram through an order issued on May 27. Rabri Devi has, however, made it clear that she has no intention of vacating the premises.

Speaking to reporters upon her return from a vacation, Rabri Devi strongly opposed the government's decision and challenged the administration to remove her forcibly if it wished to reclaim the bungalow. The residence, located near the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister's official residence, has been occupied by her for more than a decade. It was originally allotted to her during the tenure of the previous government in her capacity as a former chief minister.

The controversy is not new. In November last year, when Bihar was still under the leadership of then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the government had directed Rabri Devi to vacate the bungalow. At that time, the property was allotted to Vijay Kumar Sinha, who was serving as Deputy Chief Minister. However, despite the official notification, Sinha was unable to take possession of the residence as Rabri Devi continued to occupy it.

State Building Construction Minister Leshi Singh said the government had already allotted another official residence at 39 Hardinge Road to Rabri Devi in her capacity as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Singh emphasized that the allocation of government residences remains the prerogative of the state administration and that no occupant can claim a specific bungalow as a permanent right. The minister expressed hope that the former chief minister would comply with the government's decision.

Officials have remained cautious about commenting on whether a formal eviction notice has been issued following Rabri Devi's refusal to vacate the premises. Meanwhile, reports suggest that police presence around the property has increased. Deputy Superintendent of Police Annu Kumari was seen visiting the residence on Saturday, reportedly as part of efforts to resolve the issue, though no official details regarding the visit were disclosed.

The bungalow has long served as a key political hub for the RJD. Rabri Devi shares the residence with her husband and RJD founder, Lalu Prasad Yadav, while their son and Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, is also known to spend considerable time there despite having an official residence elsewhere. The RJD has accused the ruling NDA government of targeting opposition leaders, arguing that the pressure to vacate the bungalow is politically motivated and reflects unequal application of official rules.
