Eknath Shinde Condemns Politics Over Ajit Pawar’s Plane Crash Death

Maharashtra Dy CM calls for unity behind Pawar family, rules out conspiracy talk amid ongoing probe.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde strongly criticised attempts to politicise the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of his cabinet colleague Ajit Pawar, describing such moves as unfortunate and inappropriate. Speaking to reporters in Thane after visiting Baramati, Shinde urged everyone to avoid spreading rumours or assigning conspiratorial angles to the sensitive incident, which is already under thorough investigation by relevant authorities.

The 66-year-old NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister died along with four others—his Personal Security Officer, a flight attendant, and two pilots—when their chartered Learjet crashed near the runway edge at Baramati airport on Wednesday morning. Shinde confirmed a comprehensive probe will examine all aspects, including the airline’s role, technical factors, weather conditions, and crew actions, to determine the exact cause.

Shinde expressed deep personal grief, saying he felt as though he had lost an “elder brother.” He recalled their close working relationship in the coalition government, where Pawar handled finance and planning portfolios with remarkable efficiency. He highlighted Pawar’s support during key initiatives like the Ladki Bahin Yojana and praised his straightforward, fearless leadership, sharp decision-making, and ability to keep administration running smoothly despite the multi-party setup.

Countering demands from West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry alleging compromised agencies, Shinde pointed out that NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar—Ajit’s uncle—has already clarified it was a pure accident with no conspiracy involved. He stressed that this is the moment for the state to stand united behind the Pawar family in their hour of sorrow.

Shinde described Pawar as a visionary, disciplined, and mentoring leader who combined strictness with gentle humour, always focusing on practical, long-term benefits for citizens. He noted several Union ministers, including Amit Shah, will attend the state-honours funeral scheduled for Thursday at 11 am in Baramati.
