Driver of Private School Van Arrested in Thiruvallur District for Alleged Abuse of 8‑Year‑Old
Tamil Nadu police arrest school van driver accused of sexually abusing an eight‑year‑old girl.
A school van driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu, sparking renewed concerns over the safety of children in school transport services. The accused is facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the case is currently under investigation by local authorities.
The accused has been identified as Paneerselvam, a 57-year-old resident of Ponneri in Thiruvallur district, who had been employed for several years as a driver for a private school’s van service. The Red Hills All Women Police Station conducted the investigation following a formal complaint lodged by the child’s parents, who became concerned after noticing unusual behaviour and unexplained marks on their daughter’s body.
Police officials said that the girl, a third-grade student from Minjur, was often dropped off last among the other students. Investigators allege that the abuse occurred on multiple occasions during these trips. It was only after the child started refusing to attend school that her parents suspected something was seriously wrong and promptly reported the matter to authorities.

Following the complaint, police swiftly interrogated the driver and gathered evidence that led to Paneerselvam’s arrest. He was subsequently produced before a magistrate, who ordered that he be remanded in judicial custody pending further legal proceedings. Investigators have indicated that additional charges could be filed as more details emerge during the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has reignited debates over child safety protocols in school transport systems, with advocates and parents demanding stricter measures to prevent such abuses. Experts stress the need for comprehensive background checks, continuous monitoring of drivers and accompanying staff, and implementation of GPS tracking and CCTV surveillance in school vans to safeguard students during transit.
Education officials have urged schools and parents to be vigilant and to ensure that children know how to report uncomfortable or inappropriate behaviour. Community leaders and child welfare organizations have also called for immediate government action to strengthen enforcement of child protection laws in both public and private school settings.
This case comes amid broader national concerns over the safety of children in educational institutions and during transportation. While Tamil Nadu has implemented certain measures, including mandatory police verification for school transport staff, incidents like this highlight ongoing gaps in oversight and the urgent need for proactive intervention. Authorities continue to investigate the case thoroughly, and any new developments will be closely monitored.
The arrest of the driver is being seen as a decisive first step, but experts emphasize that preventive measures and awareness campaigns remain critical to ensuring that children can travel to and from school safely. Parents and schools are being advised to maintain open communication channels with children and to prioritize security measures in school transportation systems.
