DMK’s Big Organisational Shift: Youth And Women Set For Greater Role

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is preparing for an organisational overhaul with a focus on giving greater representation to younger and women functionaries, including in influential district secretary positions. The proposed changes come as the party looks to strengthen its organisation and reconnect with voters after its electoral setback.

The restructuring is also being viewed within the party as an effort to respond to the rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged strongly among younger voters. DMK leaders are examining whether promoting younger functionaries into key organisational roles could help the party improve its connect with this section of the electorate and strengthen its grassroots network ahead of future electoral contests.

Women are also expected to gain a larger presence in the organisational structure. The DMK currently has 78 organisational district secretaries, but former minister P. Geetha Jeevan, who heads the party's Thoothukudi district unit, is the only woman occupying the position. Her presence has highlighted the limited representation of women in one of the party's most influential organisational posts.

The district secretary plays a key role in coordinating election-related activities, mobilising party cadres and maintaining communication between the grassroots organisation and the state leadership. Party sources have indicated that the leadership is particularly concerned about the limited presence of younger faces among district secretaries, with many current office-bearers having spent several years in the organisation.

The changes could be particularly visible in Chennai and neighbouring districts, where the DMK's performance in the recently concluded Assembly election fell short of expectations. Chennai currently has six organisational district secretaries, most of them established party figures, and the leadership is considering promoting functionaries from the youth, women and student wings as part of a broader restructuring of the mid-level organisation.

The party is also examining a proposal to increase the number of organisational districts from 78 to around 100. Smaller units could make administration easier, improve coordination and allow the leadership to maintain closer contact with grassroots workers. DMK Students' Wing secretary J. Veeramani welcomed the proposed greater representation for youth and women, describing it as a step that could strengthen the party's organisation and support women's empowerment.
