DK Shivakumar on CM Post: Time Will Give the Answer
Shivakumar says time will decide his CM chance amid Karnataka power tussle.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday added fuel to speculation over the state’s leadership by suggesting that “time will answer” when he might ascend to the chief minister’s post. Speaking to reporters, he emphasised that while supporters and legislators may have aspirations, the ultimate decision rests with the Congress high command.
Shivakumar’s comments followed remarks by MLC Siddaramaiah, son of the current chief minister, who asserted that his father would serve a full term. Shivakumar responded with a hint of sarcasm, implying that Siddaramaiah seemed to be acting as the party’s high command, underscoring the tension within the state’s political circles.
The leadership discourse has intensified as the government reaches the midpoint of its term. Speculation persists regarding a power-sharing understanding reportedly agreed upon in 2023 between Shivakumar and CM Siddaramaiah. Meanwhile, other senior leaders, including Home Minister G. Parameshwara, are also signaling leadership ambitions, adding to the growing political debate within the Congress ranks.

Shivakumar clarified that while supporters are free to voice their preferences, decisions regarding leadership transitions are ultimately guided by party protocols. He urged patience and reminded the public and party members that any change would follow formal processes under the high command’s guidance.
In addition to political speculation, Shivakumar addressed the controversy surrounding a proposed Bengaluru metro fare hike. He stated that the state government had not been consulted on the decision, which was driven by a central government committee, and assured that he would review the financial structure of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) to prevent undue burden on commuters.
The Deputy Chief Minister’s remarks underscore the delicate balance of power and ambition within Karnataka’s Congress leadership. As preparations for the state’s 17th budget and upcoming administrative decisions unfold, attention remains focused on both leadership dynamics and governance priorities.
