Deve Gowda Reaffirms Strong BJP–JD(S) Alliance, Dismisses Rift Speculation

Deve Gowda rejected claims of a rift and reaffirmed a strong BJP–JD(S) alliance within the NDA.

Former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda on Monday asserted that there is no possibility of a rift between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), reaffirming that the alliance between the two parties within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) remains stable. His remarks come amid political discussions over the future of coalition dynamics in Karnataka and beyond.

Speaking to reporters after offering prayers at the Venkateshwara Temple in J. P. Nagar on the occasion of his 94th birthday, Deve Gowda said he remains committed to public service despite his age. He added that he intends to continue working on issues affecting people and would remain active in politics as long as possible, even if it requires mobility assistance in the future.

Reiterating the strength of the BJP-JD(S) partnership, the former Prime Minister said both parties maintain cordial relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He stated that the alliance is not facing any internal crisis and expressed confidence that any differences, if they arise, would be resolved through dialogue and cooperation.

Deve Gowda also referred to broader political developments in southern India, noting claims by opposition parties about their strength in states such as Kerala, Telangana, and Karnataka. However, he said it was too early to predict future political outcomes and indicated that he would speak in greater detail at an upcoming press conference scheduled for May 20.

Calling on JD(S) workers to remain disciplined, he urged party members to follow directions from senior leadership, including Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy, and to focus on grassroots organisational work. He also highlighted his long political career spanning nearly seven decades and said he remains committed to continuing his public life focused on people’s issues.
