Derek O'Brien's Head Shave Dare Backfires as BJP Leads in 5 Kolkata Seats
TMC MP Derek O'Brien promised a head shave for each BJP Kolkata win.
Derek O'Brien’s bold pre-election remark about a symbolic “head shave” has resurfaced as counting trends in the West Bengal Assembly elections show the Bharatiya Janata Party making notable gains in the city. The statement, made during a press interaction last month, has drawn renewed attention as early results indicate a competitive political shift in Kolkata.
O’Brien, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress and its representative in the Rajya Sabha, had asserted that one Member of Parliament from his party would shave their head for every seat won by the BJP in Kolkata or South 24 Parganas. At the time, he emphasized that the party did not wish to make exaggerated claims and would wait for the final results before drawing conclusions.
As of Monday evening, counting trends suggested that the BJP was leading in five out of the 11 Assembly constituencies in Kolkata, including key areas such as Maniktala and Rashbehari. The party was also showing gains in parts of South 24 Parganas, adding significance to O’Brien’s earlier statement and intensifying political discourse around the results.

During his earlier remarks, O’Brien had pointed out that Kolkata comprises 11 Assembly seats, extending the same symbolic challenge to South 24 Parganas, which has 31 constituencies. His comments were made in the context of the party’s broader confidence in retaining electoral dominance in the state, referencing its strong performance in the 2021 Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister and leader of the Trinamool Congress, expressed scepticism over the ongoing counting process. She urged party workers and counting agents to remain vigilant, alleging irregularities and calling on supporters not to lose confidence as multiple rounds of counting were still underway.
Statewide trends further indicated a strong performance by the BJP, which was leading in around 200 seats, while the Trinamool Congress lagged significantly behind. As counting continues, political leaders across parties are closely monitoring developments, with outcomes expected to shape the future political and economic trajectory of West Bengal.
