Delhi Police Refuse Permission for Jantar Mantar Protest Seeking CEC Kumar's Exit

AISA, Manoj Jha and Prashant Bhushan had called the protest.

Delhi Police has denied permission for a proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Friday seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and has deployed additional security in and around New Delhi, officials said. The demonstration has been called by the All India Students' Association, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

Police sources said around 3,000 to 4,000 people were expected to attend the protest, prompting authorities to strengthen security arrangements in the area. The decision to deny permission comes ahead of the planned gathering at the designated protest site.

The organisers have called for the demonstration against Gyanesh Kumar, although the supplied material does not provide details of the specific demands or allegations that prompted the protest. The proposed action involves the student organisation along with Jha and Bhushan.

With the expected turnout running into several thousand people, police have increased security around Jantar Mantar and other parts of New Delhi. The additional deployment is aimed at managing the situation around the protest site after permission for the demonstration was denied.

Jantar Mantar is a designated area for protests in the national capital, and gatherings there are subject to police permission and security arrangements. In this case, authorities decided not to grant permission for Friday’s proposed demonstration.

The protest was scheduled to take place on Friday, but Delhi Police’s refusal means the organisers do not have permission to hold the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar. Security arrangements remain strengthened in the area as authorities prepare for the possibility of people arriving despite the denial.
