Delhi Plans Elevated Loop and Haiderpur-Badli Overbridge Expansion to Decongest Northwest Traffic
Delhi widens the Haiderpur-Badli Railway Overbridge and builds an elevated loop to ease Northwest traffic congestion.
The Delhi government has approved two major infrastructure projects in Northwest Delhi aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across key transport corridors in the national capital. The projects include the widening of the Railway Overbridge (ROB) at Haiderpur-Badli on the Outer Ring Road and the construction of an elevated loop connecting Shalimar Bagh with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. Officials said the developments are expected to significantly ease vehicular pressure in some of Delhi’s busiest traffic zones.
According to the government, the widening of the Haiderpur-Badli ROB is intended to address long-standing congestion problems near Mukarba Chowk, a major intersection that experiences heavy daily traffic movement. The junction serves as an important entry and exit point for passenger vehicles, commercial transport, and goods carriers moving between Delhi and neighbouring states. Authorities believe the expansion of the overbridge will improve traffic flow and reduce travel delays, especially during peak hours.
The proposed elevated loop project will further strengthen connectivity in the region by linking Shalimar Bagh directly with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. The elevated structure is planned to pass over existing railway tracks, allowing smoother movement between residential and commercial zones without disruptions caused by railway crossings or bottlenecks. Officials said the loop is expected to benefit commuters, transport operators, and logistics vehicles operating in Northwest Delhi.

Mukarba Chowk has long been identified as one of Delhi’s most congested traffic intersections due to its strategic location near major highways and transport hubs. Thousands of vehicles, including heavy trucks heading towards industrial and transport centres, pass through the area every day. Urban planners and traffic authorities have repeatedly highlighted the need for infrastructure upgrades in the corridor to cope with rising vehicle numbers and growing transportation demands in the city.
The Delhi government stated that the projects form part of broader efforts to modernise road infrastructure and improve urban mobility across the capital. Officials said reducing congestion at critical intersections would also help lower fuel wastage, cut travel times, and potentially reduce pollution caused by long traffic jams. The projects are expected to complement other ongoing road and transport upgrades currently being implemented in different parts of Delhi.
While timelines for completion and detailed project costs have not yet been publicly disclosed, officials indicated that planning and implementation work would move forward in phases after the necessary approvals and technical clearances. Residents and daily commuters in Northwest Delhi are expected to benefit significantly once the projects are completed, particularly those travelling regularly through Outer Ring Road, Mukarba Chowk, and the transport corridors linked to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar.
