Delhi Drowns in Rain but Thirsts for Water: Atishi
Amid floods, AAP’s Atishi slams BJP over Delhi’s water crisis and governance failures.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government for its failure to address a paradoxical crisis in the national capital: flooded streets due to heavy monsoon rains juxtaposed against a severe shortage of drinking water in homes.
Speaking to PTI in Panaji, Atishi highlighted the unprecedented water scarcity during the monsoon season, stating, “There is water on the streets, but there is no water in people’s homes.” Her remarks underscore a growing public frustration with the city’s infrastructure and resource management under the current administration.
Atishi, now the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, accused the BJP government of mismanagement, particularly in handling the risk of Yamuna River overflows due to incessant rains. She expressed concern over the lack of proactive measures, noting, “One can only hope that people will be evacuated in time and there are no floods in Delhi.” The AAP leader also pointed to the government’s broader failures, describing the BJP’s “four-engine government” as ineffective across multiple fronts, including water supply, flood control, and public safety.
Further, Atishi raised alarms over the recurring bomb threats to Delhi schools, which she claimed occur weekly, questioning the government’s inability to trace such threats in an era of advanced technology. “Is it so difficult to track down calls and emails these days?” she asked. Her critique paints a picture of administrative lapses that have left Delhi residents grappling with both environmental and security challenges, intensifying calls for improved governance in the capital.
