D. K. Shivakumar Criticises BJP MPs Over Silence on LPG Shortage

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar criticises BJP MPs for not speaking about LPG shortage concerns.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has criticised Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over what he described as their silence on the issue of an alleged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage affecting parts of India. The senior Congress leader said the BJP MPs from Karnataka had failed to raise the matter effectively in Parliament despite growing concerns among businesses and consumers about delays in LPG supply.

Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar said restaurants, hotels and several small businesses were facing difficulties due to irregular availability of commercial LPG cylinders. According to him, these establishments rely heavily on LPG for day-to-day operations, and any disruption in supply can directly affect their ability to serve customers and maintain normal business activity. He questioned why elected representatives from the BJP had not pressed the Union government for answers on the issue.

Shivakumar also argued that MPs have a responsibility to represent the concerns of their constituents at the national level. He said the silence of BJP lawmakers on the matter was disappointing, particularly when the issue was affecting ordinary citizens and local businesses. The Deputy Chief Minister urged them to raise the concerns in Parliament and push for an immediate resolution to ensure uninterrupted LPG supplies across the country.

The Congress leader further suggested that the reported shortage may be linked to global energy market disruptions following escalating tensions involving Iran. Rising crude oil prices and supply uncertainties in international markets have affected energy supply chains worldwide, including liquefied petroleum gas shipments. Shivakumar said such external factors may be contributing to supply delays and urged the central government to clarify the situation.

Calling for swift action, Shivakumar asked the Union government to intervene and stabilise the LPG distribution system. He said steps should be taken to ensure that both domestic and commercial consumers receive adequate supplies without delays. According to him, any prolonged disruption could create serious problems for food businesses, street vendors and households that depend on LPG for cooking.

The remarks also reflect the ongoing political contest between the Congress-led government in Karnataka and the BJP at the national level. Fuel prices and energy availability have frequently emerged as contentious political issues, with opposition parties often accusing the central government of failing to shield consumers from global market fluctuations. Shivakumar said the issue should be addressed with urgency, stressing that ensuring stable fuel supply is critical for both economic activity and daily life.
