The Congress party on Tuesday accused the BJP’s “double engine” governments of failing women, labeling them a “curse for daughters” amid rising crimes against women. Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba raised the issue at a press conference, citing the recent harassment of a Union minister’s daughter in Maharashtra as a glaring example. The incident, involving a former BJP councilor, Piyush More, allegedly linked to top party leaders, has sparked outrage. “If a minister can’t secure justice for her own daughter, she should resign and fight alongside others,” Lamba demanded.

The criticism follows the arrest of three men—Kiran Mali, Aniket Bhoyi, and Anuj Patil—and the detention of a minor in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, after the February 28 incident during the Sant Muktai Yatra. Seven individuals were named in the FIR, with police alleging the accused harassed multiple girls and clashed with bodyguards. Lamba questioned the BJP’s commitment to women’s safety ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, pointing to alarming crime statistics. She claimed Gujarat saw 17,000 cases against women in nine years, with 200 monthly complaints, while Rajasthan reported 20,000 harassment cases in six months. Recent incidents in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Pune—including a gang rape at knifepoint—were also highlighted.

Lamba accused BJP-led governments of shielding perpetrators, noting inaction in several cases. “The Congress and Mahila Congress will stand firmly with these daughters and hold these governments accountable,” she vowed. The party’s attack underscores a broader narrative of systemic failure under BJP rule, challenging the “double engine” model—where the party governs both state and center—as ineffective in ensuring women’s safety, demanding accountability from those in power.
