Credit War Erupts Between Chandrababu Naidu, Jagan Reddy Parties Over Steel Plant
Political rivals battle over credit for steel plant revival.
The inauguration of the ₹18,000-crore JSW Steel plant in Andhra Pradesh's YSR Kadapa district has triggered a political tussle between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), with both sides claiming credit for reviving the long-pending industrial project. The steel plant, located at Sunnapurallapalle in the Rayalaseema region, is expected to be one of the state's largest industrial investments and has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political rivalry between Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Launching the project on Saturday, Chief Minister Naidu described the JSW Steel plant as a transformative initiative for Rayalaseema, saying his government had removed administrative and infrastructure bottlenecks that had delayed the investment for years. Addressing the gathering, he said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government had fulfilled its commitment to accelerate development in the region by facilitating land allocation, securing clearances and resolving issues that had prevented the project from progressing.
"We promised to transform Rayalaseema into a land of prosperity, and we are proving it through action. Earlier, foundation stones were laid in 2019 and again in 2023, but not even a single layer of soil was excavated," Naidu said. He added that the state government had allocated 1,100 acres of land, addressed key infrastructure requirements and ensured the project received all necessary approvals. According to the Chief Minister, the steel plant will have a production capacity of two million tonnes in two phases and is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while strengthening Andhra Pradesh's position as a major steel-producing state.

Naidu also used the occasion to criticise the previous YSRCP government, accusing it of failing to complete key irrigation projects in Rayalaseema and turning development initiatives into political events without ensuring their execution. He alleged that despite foundation stone ceremonies being held during the previous administration, the project failed to make tangible progress on the ground. The remarks formed part of a broader attack on the YSRCP's governance record in the region, which has traditionally been considered a political stronghold of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The opposition YSRCP, however, has rejected the TDP's claims and maintained that the groundwork for the JSW Steel project was laid during its tenure. Party leaders have argued that land acquisition, policy support and initial approvals for the investment were facilitated under the previous government, asserting that the current administration is attempting to take sole credit for a project that was initiated earlier. The exchange has intensified the political contest between the two parties as they seek to showcase their respective contributions to industrial development in Rayalaseema.
The JSW Steel project is regarded as one of the most significant industrial investments planned for Andhra Pradesh in recent years. Beyond its projected steel production capacity, the facility is expected to boost ancillary industries, create employment and strengthen the region's industrial ecosystem. As construction progresses, the project is likely to remain at the centre of political debate, with both the TDP and YSRCP continuing to highlight their roles in bringing the long-delayed investment to fruition.
