CPI(M) Seeks Clarification From Congress Over BJP ‘Deal’ Remarks Ahead Of INDIA Bloc Meet

CPI(M) seeks clarity from Congress over BJP tie-up allegations before INDIA bloc meeting.

Ahead of a crucial meeting of the INDIA bloc scheduled for Monday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has raised serious concerns over remarks made by the Congress party during the Kerala Assembly election campaign, alleging that the CPI(M) had a tacit understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The development comes amid renewed friction within the opposition alliance as leaders prepare to discuss strategy against the ruling BJP.

CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby has written to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge seeking clarification on what he described as repeated and “systematic” allegations made by senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, during campaigning in Kerala. Copies of the letter were also sent to other partners in the INDIA bloc.

In his communication, Baby strongly objected to claims that the CPI(M) had an understanding with the BJP or that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan maintained any special arrangement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He argued that such statements went beyond electoral criticism and undermined the spirit of cooperation that forms the basis of the opposition alliance.

The CPI(M) leader further pointed out what he termed an inconsistency in the Congress party’s position, noting that while the two parties cooperate within the INDIA bloc at the national level, Congress leaders in Kerala have simultaneously accused the Left of colluding with the BJP. He said such contradictions risk damaging the credibility and unity of the alliance ahead of upcoming political challenges.

Baby also emphasised that the INDIA bloc was formed as a broad platform of ideologically diverse parties to collectively oppose the BJP-led central government. He warned that continued public accusations among allies could weaken the coalition’s effectiveness and urged the Congress leadership to clarify its stance before the scheduled June 8 meeting in New Delhi.

Despite the tensions, the CPI(M) reaffirmed its commitment to opposition unity and said it would continue working with other INDIA bloc partners in Parliament on issues concerning governance and policy. The upcoming meeting is expected to bring together senior leaders including Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge to deliberate on joint strategy and internal coordination within the alliance.
