CPI(M) Leaders Attacked In Tamil Nadu, Party Demands Arrest Of All Accused
CPI(M) demands arrests after alleged attack on four leaders.
The CPI(M) has condemned an alleged attack on four people, including senior party leaders, near Ulundurpet in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district and demanded the immediate arrest of everyone involved. According to the party, district secretary D.M. Jayashankar, former district secretary D. Ezhumalai, district committee member D.S. Mohan and their car driver were attacked by a group of eight people on the night of August 21.
The incident allegedly occurred after the party leaders had completed arrangements for a protest scheduled in Ulundurpet. The CPI(M) said the group was travelling through Kiliyur village and had parked their vehicle when people from nearby Vadamangalam village confronted them. The attackers allegedly abused the leaders, made derogatory remarks against the party, damaged its flag and smashed the windows of their vehicle before assaulting the occupants.
CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam described the incident as a premeditated attack and alleged that it was linked to the party's campaign over reported irregularities in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Vadamangalam. The party alleged that a former village panchayat president had collected money from residents after promising to facilitate the construction of 22 houses under the scheme but failed to complete the work.

According to the CPI(M), its workers had mobilised affected residents and organised protests demanding justice and the return of their money. The party also claimed that its local campaign had focused on several other issues concerning residents. Shanmugam alleged that the former panchayat president was angered by the CPI(M)'s intervention and that an eight-member group, including the former president's two sons, planned the attack in retaliation.
A complaint has been lodged at the Kalamarudur police station following the incident. The injured leaders received medical treatment at a hospital and have since returned home, according to the party. However, the CPI(M) expressed concern that police had arrested only one person so far and urged authorities to take further action against all those named in connection with the alleged assault.
The CPI(M) State Executive Committee has demanded that Tamil Nadu Police immediately arrest all the accused, including the former panchayat president's two sons. The party has also sought the use of stringent legal provisions against those responsible. The allegations regarding the motive and identities of the other accused are part of the ongoing police investigation, and further action is expected as the inquiry progresses.
