CPI(M) Leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya Alleges Kolkata Home Attack, BJP Denies Role

Bhattacharya alleges attackers damaged windows and CCTV cameras.

CPI(M) leader and former Rajya Sabha member Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya alleged that unidentified persons attacked his residence in southeast Kolkata early Thursday morning by throwing glass bottles at the house. The incident took place around 5 am in the Purbalok area near EM Bypass under the jurisdiction of East Jadavpur police station. Several window panes were damaged in the incident, while CCTV cameras at the residence were also reportedly affected.

According to Bhattacharya's complaint, people on motorcycles arrived outside his residence and targeted the house with bottles. He said he heard a loud sound and was alerted by his domestic help before finding that the windows had been damaged. Police have obtained CCTV footage as part of the investigation. Reports said at least one person seen in the footage had his face covered, while the motorcycle's number plate was also concealed.

Bhattacharya alleged that the attack was politically motivated and accused BJP-backed supporters of being behind it. He also claimed that the attackers abused him and issued threats during the incident. The CPI(M) leader said the attack was linked to his criticism of Hindu fundamentalism. However, these allegations have not been established by the police, and the identity and motive of those involved remain under investigation.

The BJP has denied having any political connection to the incident. BJP MLA Sarbori Mukherjee condemned the attack while describing those involved as miscreants rather than party workers. She also rejected the allegation of a BJP link, saying that individuals involved in such acts should not automatically be identified with the party. Police are examining the available CCTV footage and other evidence to establish who carried out the attack.

The incident drew condemnation from Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh, who alleged that attacks involving masked motorcycle-borne groups were becoming a concern in West Bengal. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also condemned the incident and called for unity among members of the legal profession irrespective of political affiliations. The episode has renewed concerns over attacks targeting lawyers and political figures in the state.
