Court Records Witnesses in Rahul Gandhi Hathras Defamation Case

Court records witnesses against Rahul Gandhi in defamation suit.

A Hathras MP-MLA court took significant steps in a defamation case against Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi, recording statements from two witnesses who accused him of wrongly labeling three acquitted youths as "accused" in the 2020 Hathras gang-rape case. The court, presided over by Judge Deepak Nath Saraswati, set October 27 as the next date for evidence submission, intensifying scrutiny on Gandhi’s remarks.

The case stems from comments allegedly made by Gandhi on December 12, 2024, in Bulgadhi village, where he claimed, "The accused are roaming free while the victim's family is locked inside the house." This statement, according to advocate Munna Singh Pundhir, was "defamatory and insulting" to the three youths—Ravi, Ram Kumar (alias Ramu), and Luv Kush—who were acquitted by a CBI court after over two-and-a-half years in jail. Witnesses Dhruv Sisodia and Jagbir testified on behalf of complainant Luv Kush, with evidence in the cases of Ravi and Ram Kumar already completed.

Pundhir, representing the trio, revealed that three separate defamation cases were filed against Gandhi after he failed to respond to a legal notice demanding Rs 1.5 crore—Rs 50 lakh for each youth. The controversy traces back to the tragic 2020 Hathras case, where a Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped in September and later died during treatment in Delhi. Four men from her village were accused, but after a CBI probe and trial, Ravi, Ram Kumar, and Luv Kush were acquitted, while Sandeep remains incarcerated.

The defamation suit highlights the lingering tensions surrounding the high-profile case, with the acquitted youths seeking to clear their names against what they claim are damaging misrepresentations. As the court prepares to issue a notice to Gandhi, the case could further polarize public opinion, spotlighting issues of justice, accountability, and political rhetoric in Uttar Pradesh.
