Counterfeit IMFL Bottles Kill 4, Hospitalise 19 in Gujarat; Police Launch Crackdown

Four die, 19 hospitalised after liquor consumption.

At least four people have died and 19 others have been hospitalised in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Kharadi village, police said. The suspected incident took place in Ghogha taluka on Tuesday night, following which several people fell ill and were taken to different hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the suspected supply of illegal liquor in the area. According to police, the affected people had allegedly consumed liquor suspected to be spurious before their health deteriorated.

The 19 people who survived the suspected poisoning are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals in the district. Their medical condition and the precise nature of the symptoms have not been detailed by authorities so far. Medical examinations and further investigation are expected to establish whether consumption of the suspected liquor was directly responsible for the deaths and illnesses.

The incident has prompted police to act against people suspected of being involved in the illegal liquor trade. Ten suspected bootleggers have been detained in connection with the case, officials said. Investigators are questioning them to determine the source of the liquor, how it reached Kharadi village and whether others were involved in its manufacture, transportation or distribution.

Police are also expected to examine the network through which the suspected spurious liquor was supplied to consumers. Samples of the liquor allegedly consumed by the victims are likely to be examined as part of the investigation. Forensic testing can help determine whether the substance contained toxic chemicals or other dangerous ingredients. Authorities will also rely on medical reports and post-mortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death.

Until those examinations are completed, the precise circumstances leading to the four deaths remain under investigation. Spurious liquor incidents can result in serious illness or death because illegally produced alcohol may contain toxic substances or unsafe concentrations of chemicals.

Unlike legally manufactured alcoholic beverages, illicit liquor does not undergo regulated quality checks and can therefore pose significant health risks. Victims may suffer severe poisoning and require urgent medical intervention, depending on what substances were present in the drink and how much was consumed.

The Bhavnagar incident has raised concern in Kharadi village and surrounding areas, particularly as a large number of people have reportedly required hospitalisation. Local authorities are coordinating with police and medical teams as the investigation continues. The focus is expected to remain on identifying the source of the suspected liquor and preventing any further consumption of the same substance.

The detention of 10 suspected bootleggers represents an early step in the police investigation. Authorities will need to establish the individual roles of those detained and determine whether the suspected liquor was manufactured locally or brought into the area from elsewhere. Investigators may also examine financial transactions, supply routes and communications to identify other people who could be connected to the alleged illegal trade.

The case also highlights the continuing risks posed by unregulated liquor networks. Illegal alcohol sales can operate outside the licensing and safety systems that govern legitimate products, making it difficult for consumers to verify the contents or origin of what they purchase. Where contaminated liquor enters a community, multiple people can be exposed within a short period, potentially resulting in a large number of casualties.

For the families of those who died, the immediate focus is on establishing how their relatives came into contact with the suspected liquor and whether the deaths could have been prevented. Those hospitalised are being treated as the authorities work to determine the scale of the incident. Further medical updates could provide a clearer picture of the impact on those who survived. Police are continuing their probe into the Bhavnagar incident, while forensic and medical findings are expected to play an important role in determining the exact cause of the deaths.

The investigation will also determine whether the detained suspects face further legal action based on the evidence collected. Until the inquiry is completed, the allegations against the suspects remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
