Congress Walks Out Of Special Session In Madhya Pradesh Assembly After Bill Rejection

Congress walks out after women’s quota bill rejection in MP

The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly witnessed a dramatic political confrontation on Monday after the opposition Congress staged a walkout during a special session convened to discuss the Women’s Reservation Bill. The session was marked by heated exchanges between ruling and opposition benches over the timing and implementation of the proposed quota for women.

The special one-day session was called to deliberate on a resolution related to the 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav moved the “Nari Shakti Vandan Sankalp” resolution, reiterating the state government’s support for the quota while linking its implementation to the delimitation exercise that would follow the next census. The proposal sparked immediate objections from the opposition.

Congress leaders argued that the government was delaying genuine implementation of women’s reservation by tying it to future delimitation exercises. They demanded immediate enforcement of the quota, stating that legislative intent had already been established at the national level and that further postponement undermined women’s representation in politics.

As tensions escalated in the House, Congress members raised procedural objections and criticised the government’s approach, leading to disruptions in proceedings. Eventually, the party staged a walkout, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of using the session for political positioning rather than meaningful legislative action.

The ruling party, however, defended its stance, maintaining that the resolution was a step toward structured implementation of women’s reservation and that constitutional and administrative processes, including delimitation, must be completed before enforcement. Government leaders also criticised the opposition for avoiding debate on a key empowerment issue.

The session highlighted deep political divisions over the Women’s Reservation Bill, which has been a long-standing national issue. With both sides holding firm positions on timing and execution, the matter is expected to remain a significant point of contention in Madhya Pradesh politics and beyond.
