Congress To Support Vijay In Tamil Nadu With Conditional Alliance Framework
Congress conditions support for Vijay on exclusion of communal forces in alliance talks.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay has received conditional support from the Indian National Congress to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, following his party’s strong debut in the recent Assembly elections. The support, however, comes with a strict political condition aimed at keeping “communal forces” out of any governing alliance.
According to a statement issued by Girish Chodankar, the AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party have agreed to extend support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The party emphasised that its backing is based on shared constitutional values and opposition to communal politics.
The Congress clarified that its support is contingent upon TVK ensuring that no “communal forces” are included in the alliance. The party said the partnership must remain aligned with the principles of the Constitution of India and reflect a secular and progressive political framework. The statement also described the arrangement as one based on mutual respect and long-term political cooperation beyond just government formation.

Electorally, the Congress brings five additional MLAs to Vijay’s side. With TVK holding 107 seats, the combined strength would rise to 112 in the 234-member Assembly. However, the alliance would still fall short of the 118-seat majority mark, requiring support from at least six more legislators or parties to secure government formation.
To bridge the gap, TVK has reportedly initiated outreach to other regional and left parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). If these parties extend support, the alliance could cross the majority threshold, strengthening TVK’s position in the Assembly.
Meanwhile, political developments have also indicated possible behind-the-scenes discussions between TVK representatives and leaders of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), suggesting fluid negotiations in the post-election landscape. The AIADMK is currently aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level.
The Congress statement further noted that the alliance framework extends beyond immediate government formation, covering future cooperation in local body elections as well as potential coordination for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha contests. It also referred to a joint commitment to uphold the mandate of voters seeking a secular and youth-driven political direction in Tamil Nadu.
The Assembly verdict itself marked a significant political shift, with TVK emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats, while the DMK secured 59 seats and the AIADMK won 47. Vijay, who contested from two constituencies, won both, and is expected to retain one seat while vacating the other, potentially triggering a bypoll.
