Congress Blames Maharashtra Govt for Nagpur Factory Blast Tragedy

Congress links Nagpur explosives blast deaths to govt failure on factory safety audits.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the Maharashtra government of negligence in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on March 4, 2026, claiming that lax oversight and failure to enforce safety protocols directly contributed to a devastating explosion at an explosives manufacturing unit that killed at least 19 workers.

The blast occurred on March 1, 2026, at the detonator assembly and packing unit of SBL Energy Limited, a mining and industrial explosives manufacturer, in Raulgaon village, Katol tehsil, approximately 25-30 km from Nagpur city. The explosion happened around 7:00-7:30 AM, affecting workers—many of them women—on the morning shift. Initial reports indicated 17 deaths, with the toll rising to 19 as injured victims succumbed to their burns and injuries. At least 23 others were hospitalized, several in critical condition, with bodies charred beyond recognition complicating identification efforts.

Wadettiwar, speaking during assembly proceedings, blamed both state and central authorities for the tragedy, alleging that repeated warnings about inadequate safety audits in explosives factories had been ignored. He pointed to a pattern of similar incidents in the region, claiming 43 workers had died in comparable blasts over recent years due to governmental oversight failures. The opposition leader demanded accountability from regulatory bodies like the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), and the labour commissionerate, which he said had neglected routine inspections and enforcement of safety norms.

In response to the incident, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule acknowledged prima facie negligence on the part of SBL Energy Limited for not adhering to safety measures, as indicated by preliminary reports from safety agencies. He stated that accountability would extend to regulatory officials if lapses are confirmed, with a detailed probe ordered by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Police arrested nine of the company's directors under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and compensation has been announced: Rs 5 lakh from the state government, Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, and additional aid from the company for families of the deceased.

The tragedy has reignited debates on industrial safety in hazardous sectors, particularly in Vidarbha's explosives manufacturing hubs, where multiple blasts in recent years have raised concerns over regulatory enforcement. Rescue operations involved the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), while the incident continues to draw criticism from opposition parties for systemic failures in protecting vulnerable workers. As investigations proceed, the focus remains on preventing future occurrences through stricter compliance and oversight.
