Congress Slams Dhankhar’s Ouster as ‘Political Ploy,’ Accuses BJP of Undermining Democracy
Congress calls ex-Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation a “political exit camouflaged as a constitutional lie,”.
The Congress party sharply criticized the sudden resignation of former Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, labeling it a “political exit camouflaged as a constitutional lie.” Addressing a press conference, senior Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi accused the BJP-led government of indulging in “petty politics” by refusing to admit an Opposition motion in the Rajya Sabha against Justice Yashwant Varma, who is embroiled in a suspected corruption case, while selectively targeting him but ignoring a similar motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court for alleged hate speech in December 2024.
Singhvi highlighted the government’s “double standards” in judicial accountability, noting that the Opposition’s motion against Justice Varma, backed by 63 Rajya Sabha and 152 Lok Sabha members, was intended to form a statutory inquiry committee as per parliamentary procedure. He questioned the government’s “unilateralism” in prioritizing a Lok Sabha motion to remove Varma while sidelining the Rajya Sabha’s, potentially providing Varma with grounds to challenge the process legally.
Singhvi suggested Dhankhar’s resignation was triggered by his “minimal independence,” accusing the BJP of orchestrating a “theatre of the absurd” to control the narrative and undermine democratic institutions, including Parliament and the judiciary.

The Congress leader further criticized the BJP’s “governance by tantrum,” alleging it jeopardizes democracy by prioritizing optics over constitutional principles. He called for a multi-partisan approach, urging the government to honor the collaborative spirit of parliamentary procedures rather than engaging in a “race” between houses.
Singhvi warned that such actions reflect the BJP’s “one nation, one party” obsession, endangering the democratic fabric by sabotaging institutional integrity for political gain.
