Congress Reclaims Surat Municipal Corporation; AAP's Ambitious Push Collapses
Congress wins its first Surat Municipal Corporation seat in five years; AAP state leader Manoj Sorathia is defeated.
The Indian National Congress registered a symbolic comeback in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) election results 2026, opening its account after years of absence in the civic body as counting of votes for the Gujarat local body polls continued on Tuesday. The result marked an important moment for the party in one of Gujarat’s key urban centres, where it had struggled to remain electorally relevant in recent municipal contests. The latest outcome also reflected changing political equations in Surat, where multiple parties have been competing for space.
Congress candidate Arshad Jariwala secured victory from Ward No. 12, giving the party its first win in the civic corporation after a long gap. The victory is being seen as a morale boost for Congress workers and supporters, especially after the party’s poor performance in previous elections. Leaders are expected to project the result as evidence that the party still retains pockets of support in urban Gujarat despite recent setbacks.
The Congress had suffered a complete wipeout in the 2021 Surat Municipal Corporation elections, failing to win a single seat out of the 120-member civic body. That defeat had raised serious concerns about the party’s organisational strength in the city. By winning a seat in the 2026 election, the party has managed to re-enter the corporation and restore at least a limited presence in Surat’s civic politics.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had emerged as a major challenger in the previous election cycle, faced a setback in the latest counting trends and declared results. Senior party leader Manoj Sorathia was defeated from Ward No. 4, dealing a blow to the party’s local campaign. The result may raise questions about whether AAP has been able to sustain the momentum it generated in earlier Surat civic elections.
The Surat Municipal Corporation results are being closely watched as an indicator of urban political trends in Gujarat. While the BJP continues to remain the dominant force in most civic contests, Congress’s return and AAP’s struggles add new dimensions to the opposition landscape. As final ward-wise results continue to emerge, parties are likely to assess the outcome as they prepare for future electoral battles in the state.
