Congress Pushes Opposition Unity In Goa, But Can Rival Parties Unite Before 2027 Elections?

With the 2027 Goa Assembly elections approaching, the Congress is stepping up efforts to bring opposition parties together under a common platform to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During his recent visit to the state, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge repeatedly emphasised “Ekvott”, a Konkani word meaning unity, as the party looks to build an opposition alliance ahead of the February 2027 polls. The push comes as Congress seeks to coordinate with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and regional political outfits in the state. Kharge said opposition parties needed to set aside differences and contest the upcoming election together. “In the coming elections, we need to all come together and fight together,” he said outside the meeting venue during his Goa visit.

Kharge also said opposition leaders had assured him that they would work together to defeat the BJP. His remarks underline the Congress leadership's intention to make opposition unity a central component of its strategy for the next Assembly election. The Congress has initiated outreach to AAP as well as regional parties, including the Goa Forward Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party. The objective is to explore whether the parties can reach an arrangement that avoids a division of anti-BJP votes. Goa's political landscape has traditionally included several parties and independent political forces, making seat-level coordination potentially important for an opposition grouping seeking to challenge the BJP across the state's constituencies.

State Congress president Girish Chodankar said the effort was being driven by what he described as a public demand for opposition unity. “It is the demand of the people that the opposition parties come together and we are trying to bring everyone together,” Chodankar said. He added that Congress remained open to other parties willing to take on the BJP and that discussions with potential allies would continue. Chodankar said he had spoken to Viresh Borkar and Valmiki Naik and expected talks with the two leaders to progress over the coming days. The outreach indicates that Congress is attempting to move beyond broad appeals for unity and begin discussions with individual parties and leaders.

However, translating these talks into a formal alliance would require agreement on issues such as seat-sharing, candidate selection and the leadership structure of any proposed coalition. For the opposition, the challenge is not simply bringing parties to the same negotiating table but ensuring that their respective political interests can be reconciled before the election. Regional parties have their own organisational structures, voter bases and electoral priorities, while Congress and AAP have competed against each other in previous elections. Any alliance would therefore need to overcome differences and establish a workable strategy that prevents friendly contests between opposition candidates.

The BJP, meanwhile, remains the principal target of the proposed opposition arrangement. Congress leaders believe that a united contest could consolidate votes against the ruling party and improve the opposition's prospects in the 2027 election. Whether that strategy succeeds will depend on how effectively the parties negotiate their differences and whether voters accept the alliance as a credible alternative. For now, “Ekvott” has become the central message of Congress's Goa campaign strategy, but political unity remains a work in progress. With the 2027 Assembly polls still ahead, the coming months are likely to determine whether the Congress can convert its outreach to AAP and regional parties into a concrete electoral arrangement. The success or failure of those negotiations could significantly shape the contest against the BJP in Goa.
