Congress Insists on Two-Day Debate Over Pahalgam Attack, Operation Sindoor
Opposition demands answers on critical national issues
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh declared the opposition’s demand for a two-day parliamentary debate on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, US President Donald Trump’s claims, and China’s role as “non-negotiable” ahead of the Monsoon session starting Monday. In an interview with PTI, Ramesh insisted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must address these issues on the House floor.
The INDIA bloc, which Ramesh said remains united, will hold virtual deliberations on Saturday, with plans for a subsequent in-person meeting in Delhi. The bloc also demands a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, labeling it a “diabolical” move to disenfranchise Dalits, minorities, tribals, and migrant workers. Ramesh alleged the SIR, backed by the Election Commission, is a BJP-orchestrated “votebandi” to rig Bihar elections, citing former Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and OP Rawat.
Ramesh highlighted significant statements from senior defense officials—CDS General Anil Chauhan, Group Captain Shivkumar, and Lt. Gen. Rahul Singh—on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strikes on terror camps in Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. He questioned the abrupt ceasefire, China’s support to Pakistan’s Air Force, and Trump’s repeated claims of mediating the truce, which India has denied.

Criticizing the government’s “my way or the highway” approach, Ramesh contrasted it with past practices, like the Kargil Review Committee’s prompt formation. He also demanded legislation to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and include Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule.
