Congress Criticises PM’s Silence On Israel–Lebanon Conflict And Foreign Policy Stance
Congress criticises PM over Israel–Lebanon silence, triggers political row.
The Congress party on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what it described as his “complete silence” on Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, escalating its political attack on the Centre over India’s foreign policy stance on the West Asia conflict. The remarks came amid heightened tensions in the region and ongoing international diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, posting on X, referred to ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran aimed at de-escalating tensions in West Asia. He said a potential agreement could reopen the Strait of Hormuz and help ease global oil prices, developments he argued were significant for India’s economic interests.
Ramesh further alleged that these negotiations had been complicated by continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which he described as “unprecedented incursions”. He claimed the situation was contributing to instability at a time when diplomatic efforts were underway to restore regional balance. He also cited media reports and remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump, suggesting that Trump had expressed frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during recent discussions.

According to Ramesh, Trump had reportedly intervened to discourage a planned Israeli strike on Beirut, after which Israeli forces were said to have paused or adjusted their actions. The Congress leader also said India was not among the countries publicly condemning Israel’s actions, questioning the government’s position on the issue.
He used sharp political language, asking whether the “so-called fatherland” mattered more to the Prime Minister than the “actual motherland”, intensifying his criticism of the government’s foreign policy stance. Separately, reports cited by Ramesh claimed that tensions had risen during a phone call between Trump and Netanyahu, though these details have not been independently verified.
