Congress Clarifies Support To TVK Aimed At Preserving Secular Values In Tamil Nadu

Congress defends backing TVK, saying decision aims to strengthen secular values and political harmony in Tamil Nadu.

The Congress party on Thursday defended its decision to extend political support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. The move has triggered criticism from rival parties and internal debate, but Congress leaders maintained that the decision was taken to protect the secular character of Tamil Nadu. The party said it was acting in response to the evolving post-election political situation in the state.

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and MLA S. Rajeshkumar issued a detailed statement addressing the controversy. He strongly rejected allegations that Congress had compromised its ideological position or sought political gain through the alliance. According to him, the decision was not driven by opportunism but by the need to safeguard democratic values and ensure that communal forces do not gain space in Tamil Nadu politics.

Rajeshkumar further stated that the Congress party has consistently stood for secularism and social justice in the state. He said critics were attempting to misinterpret the party’s position for political advantage. He also emphasized that Congress had remained aligned with the secular and progressive INDIA bloc during the elections and had actively worked to strengthen opposition to communal political forces.

Speaking about TVK, Rajeshkumar noted that the party led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay has publicly positioned itself as a secular movement. He highlighted that Vijay has often expressed admiration for former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, whose leadership is widely associated with social justice and inclusive governance in Tamil Nadu. He added that such ideological references played a role in Congress viewing TVK as aligned on key democratic values.

He further explained that the Congress party’s support should be understood in the context of maintaining unity among secular forces in the state. According to him, fragmented opposition would weaken resistance to communal politics, which Congress claims is a growing concern. He stressed that the objective was to ensure long-term political stability based on shared constitutional values. Concluding his remarks, Rajeshkumar reaffirmed that Congress would continue its political journey based on secularism and social justice. He said the party remains committed to protecting the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu and preventing any communal polarization in the state’s political landscape.
