Congress Claims Amit Shah Is Orchestrating Move To Lure Opposition MPs
Congress alleges bid to lure Opposition MPs, questions democracy.
The Congress on Wednesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining democratic norms and attempting to weaken opposition parties by encouraging defections through inducements. The allegations were made by Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh, who claimed that efforts were underway to lure elected representatives away from parties that had campaigned against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Ramesh alleged that Shah was continuing an aggressive political campaign against opposition parties following what he described as a setback for the ruling party in Parliament earlier this year. In a post on social media platform X, the Congress leader claimed that several politicians elected on a strong anti-BJP platform were being persuaded to switch allegiance to the BJP through attractive incentives.
According to Ramesh, the inducements being offered to opposition leaders were substantial and tailored to individual circumstances. He accused the Home Minister of orchestrating a calculated effort to expand the BJP’s political influence by encouraging defections from rival parties. The Congress leader further alleged that the campaign had no regard for democratic principles and was aimed at weakening opposition unity.

The remarks came amid speculation over possible defections from the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra. Political developments in the state have triggered discussions about the stability of opposition parties and the possibility of lawmakers changing political affiliations ahead of future electoral contests. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut also raised concerns over alleged attempts to lure elected representatives.
In a post on X late Tuesday, Raut claimed that efforts were being made to attract Members of Parliament from Maharashtra and alleged that large sums of money were being offered as incentives. He described the reported developments as “shocking and disgusting.” The BJP has not publicly responded to the latest allegations. Claims of inducements and attempts to engineer defections have frequently surfaced in Indian politics, particularly during periods of political realignment, often leading to sharp exchanges between ruling and opposition parties over the functioning of democratic institutions.
