Congress Chief Kharge Accuses BJP of ‘Power Theft’ with Controversial Bills
Congress chief Kharge accuses BJP of using new bills to seize power and weaken democracy.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in “satta chori” (power theft) through new bills that he claims undermine democracy. Speaking at a meeting with newly-appointed District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents from Haryana and Madhya Pradesh at Indira Bhawan, Kharge alleged that the BJP, after orchestrating “vote chori” (vote theft), is now using legislation to topple opposition governments within 30 days by weaponizing arrests through agencies like the ED and CBI. “It is like running a bulldozer on democracy,” he stated.
Kharge criticized three bills introduced in the Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, which propose removing prime ministers, chief ministers, or ministers detained for 30 consecutive days on serious charges. He argued these measures strip citizens of their right to elect or remove governments, handing power to investigative agencies.
Kharge also highlighted alleged vote manipulation in areas like Karnataka’s Mahadevapura and Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, urging DCC leaders to vigilantly monitor voter lists to prevent such tactics.
Emphasizing organizational unity, Kharge instructed DCC chiefs to form loyal and ideologically committed booth and Mandal committees. He stressed the pivotal role of district presidents in strengthening the Congress to win elections, warning against factionalism. Citing Rahul Gandhi’s “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar, Kharge underscored the party’s commitment to protecting voting rights, a legacy he attributed to Congress, including Rajiv Gandhi’s reduction of the voting age to 18.
