Congress Alleges Severe Threats To Electoral Democracy Under Modi-Shah Leadership

Congress raises concerns over electoral democracy under current regime.

The Congress party on Friday alleged that India’s electoral democracy is facing the “gravest of threats” under the present government, escalating its attack on the ruling establishment over the conduct of elections and the functioning of constitutional institutions. The party also urged the Supreme Court to intervene and take urgent steps to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, citing concerns raised by opposition parties over recent developments related to voter roll revisions and the Election Commission of India.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal made the remarks in a post on social media platform X, where he also shared a letter reportedly signed by 23 opposition parties and an Independent Member of Parliament. The letter, addressed to the Chief Justice of India, raises objections over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging procedural flaws, and also questions what it describes as a “partisan role” of the Election Commission of India. The opposition leaders have claimed that these issues collectively threaten the fairness of the electoral system.

According to Venugopal, the concerns outlined in the June 28 letter include irregularities in the SIR process and broader apprehensions about the independence and neutrality of the Election Commission. He said the signatories believe that such issues, if unaddressed, could undermine public confidence in free and fair elections. The Congress leader emphasized that the judiciary has a crucial responsibility in ensuring that democratic processes are protected from executive overreach.

Venugopal further stated that the Supreme Court must play a decisive role in preventing what he described as potential injustice against voters and preserving the credibility of the electoral framework. He argued that maintaining transparency and accountability in the election process is essential in a democracy of 1.4 billion people, adding that public trust in institutions must be safeguarded at all costs.

The Congress leader also said the decision to release the letter publicly was taken in the interest of transparency. He expressed hope that the Supreme Court would consider the concerns raised by the opposition and take appropriate measures to restore faith in the electoral system. The ruling party has not yet responded to the allegations, and the Election Commission of India has also not issued a statement on the matter.
