Congress Alleges PM Modi’s Diplomacy Failures Expose India’s Regional Setbacks
Congress calls PM Modi’s diplomacy failures expose Vishwaguru as Vishwaphoney.
The Congress on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Pakistan’s emerging role as a mediator in the ongoing West Asia conflict reflects the “colossal failure” of the government’s foreign policy, diplomatic engagement, and narrative management. The criticism follows the Modi government’s remarks during an all-party meeting on March 25, which stated that Pakistan’s mediation efforts are not new and noted that the country has long been “used” by the United States.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the government’s “personality-driven” foreign policy has failed to translate India’s military successes, including Operation Sindoor, into strategic leverage. “Undoubtedly, President Donald Trump has contributed heavily to Pakistan’s current respectability,” Ramesh wrote in a post on X, questioning why Modi’s close ties with the White House, showcased through events like Howdy Modi in 2019 and Namaste Trump in 2020, have not secured diplomatic gains for India.
Ramesh criticized the Modi government for attempting to appease the US through trade deals, including those that opened Indian agricultural markets, arguing that these efforts have not earned India significant diplomatic influence. “The unravelling of his heavily personality-driven foreign policy has exposed the self-styled Vishwaguru as a Vishwaphoney,” he added.

The remarks come as Pakistan hosts a quadrilateral summit with foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey to discuss peace efforts in the region. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also held a detailed phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, condemning Israeli attacks and discussing ongoing hostilities and peace initiatives.
The Congress has repeatedly highlighted the government’s handling of regional diplomacy, calling the reference to Pakistan as a “dalaal nation” a reflection of India’s diplomatic setback. Ramesh noted that India’s international image is being undermined despite the efforts of experienced officials like External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who he said are attempting to manage the “extreme embarrassment” caused by Pakistan’s mediation role.
The party described Pakistan’s role as a mediator as “the most damning indictment” of Modi’s diplomacy, arguing that it exposes the contrast between the government’s rhetoric and the realities of India’s influence in regional affairs. Congress leaders claim this reflects a foreign policy marked by “bombast and cowardice,” rather than strategic foresight.
