Congress Accuses BJP Of Unlawful Confinement Of TNCC Chief Selvaperunthagai

Congress alleges TNCC chief was confined by IT officials.

The Congress party has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “silencing dissent” following allegations that Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K Selvaperunthagai was unlawfully confined during questioning by Income Tax officials, escalating political tensions between the two parties.

According to Congress leaders, Selvaperunthagai was detained for an extended period during an Income Tax department inquiry, which the party has described as politically motivated. They have alleged that the questioning went beyond standard procedural limits and amounted to intimidation aimed at opposition leadership in the state.

Party spokespersons claimed that the incident reflects a broader pattern of misuse of central investigative agencies against opposition figures. They argued that such actions undermine democratic norms and are intended to pressure political rivals ahead of key electoral developments in Tamil Nadu.

The Income Tax department has not issued a detailed public response to the allegations of unlawful confinement. However, officials typically maintain that such questioning is conducted strictly under legal provisions and within the scope of ongoing investigations related to financial compliance and tax-related scrutiny.

The BJP has rejected the Congress allegations, stating that investigative agencies operate independently and that due process is followed in all enforcement actions. Party representatives have countered that allegations of political targeting are routinely made without substantiation when enforcement actions involve opposition leaders.

The controversy has further intensified the political climate in Tamil Nadu, where relations between the ruling alliance and opposition parties remain sharply divided. Political observers note that disputes involving central agencies often trigger wider debates on institutional independence and federal relations.

As the issue continues to unfold, Congress leaders have demanded clarification and safeguards to prevent what they describe as the misuse of investigative powers. Further statements from both sides are expected as the matter draws continued political attention in the state.
