Charanjit Singh Channi Missed Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha Speech For Rally

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi skipped Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's speech in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday and instead attended a party rally in Punjab's Faridkot. Channi, the Member of Parliament from Jalandhar, was the only one among the seven Congress MPs from Punjab absent during the Leader of the Opposition's address in Parliament, where Rahul Gandhi criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over recent police action against protesters. His absence has drawn attention within political circles, particularly as the speech was considered significant for the party's parliamentary strategy.

According to Congress sources, there was no formal party whip directing MPs to remain present during Rahul Gandhi's speech. However, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, who heads the Congress parliamentary group, reportedly sent a WhatsApp message to all party MPs requesting that they be present in the Lok Sabha from 12 noon onwards. While the communication was advisory rather than mandatory, most Congress lawmakers attended the proceedings.

Instead of remaining in Parliament, Channi travelled to Faridkot to participate in a Congress rally organised in the state. The event formed part of the party's political outreach programme in Punjab, where Congress leaders have been holding public meetings and interacting with supporters on various state and national issues. His decision to prioritise the rally over the parliamentary session has sparked discussion regarding coordination between the party's parliamentary and organisational activities.

Rahul Gandhi used his Lok Sabha address to target the BJP over the handling of recent protests, alleging excessive police action and raising concerns over the government's approach to public demonstrations. His speech formed a key part of the Opposition's strategy during the ongoing Parliament session, with Congress seeking to highlight issues related to governance, law and order, and the treatment of protesters.

Although no disciplinary action is expected because attendance was not mandated through an official whip, Channi's absence has nevertheless attracted attention due to the importance of the debate and the presence of other Congress MPs from Punjab. Parliamentary party communications, while not legally binding in the absence of a whip, are generally intended to ensure coordinated participation during significant discussions in the House.

Neither Charanjit Singh Channi nor the Congress leadership had issued a detailed public statement explaining his absence at the time of reporting. The incident comes as the Congress balances its parliamentary responsibilities with political mobilisation across states, particularly in Punjab, where the party continues efforts to strengthen its organisational presence ahead of future electoral contests.
