Chandigarh Gets Rs 10 Crore Civic Boost as MC Approves Roads, Drainage and Sewer Upgrades

Chandigarh MC approves over Rs 10 crore for road, drainage and sewerage upgrades across city sectors.

The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has approved development works worth over Rs 10 crore, focusing on improving road infrastructure, drainage systems, and sewerage networks across the city. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Mayor Saurabh Joshi, with Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar and other councillors and officials in attendance. The initiative aims to enhance civic infrastructure and address long-standing maintenance issues in multiple sectors.

A significant portion of the approved budget has been allocated to the relaying and repair of paver blocks in key residential and public areas. Works include repairs around parks in Sector 20-B, Sector 20-C, and Sector 35, each involving substantial investments to improve pedestrian pathways and public spaces. These projects are expected to enhance accessibility and provide safer, more durable surfaces for residents.

The committee also cleared several road and pavement-related projects aimed at improving urban mobility. These include the relaying of paver blocks on the V-5 road in Sector 20-B, pavement repair and raising works in Sector 45, and kerb and channel improvements across Sectors 43, 34, and 35. Additional approvals were granted for repairing interlocking paver blocks along the V-4 road in Sector 41 and footpath upgrades on Dev Samaj College Road in Sector 45-B.

Drainage and sewerage upgrades form another key component of the development plan, particularly in areas facing recurring waterlogging and sanitation issues. The strengthening of sewage lines in villages and urban pockets is expected to improve waste management and reduce the risk of system failures during heavy rainfall. These measures are aimed at ensuring more efficient and sustainable civic infrastructure.

Officials indicated that the approved works are part of a broader strategy to modernise Chandigarh’s infrastructure and address maintenance backlogs. By prioritising both road quality and underground systems, the Municipal Corporation seeks to improve overall urban living conditions. The projects are also expected to generate local employment during the execution phase.

The implementation of these works will be closely monitored to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards. With a comprehensive approach covering roads, drainage, and sewerage, the initiative reflects the city administration’s effort to deliver improved civic amenities and maintain Chandigarh’s reputation as a well-planned urban centre.
