Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with porters at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday, spending around 40 minutes listening to their concerns. The visit, which took place on March 1, highlighted his ongoing efforts to connect with grassroots communities. Porters expressed gratitude for his attention, sharing issues such as the need for better medical facilities and job security, including demands for Group D railway positions.

Gandhi’s interaction also served as an opportunity to thank the porters for their heroic actions during a stampede at the station on February 15, which claimed 18 lives amid a rush of passengers heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh. In a post on X, he praised their humanity, stating, “Often it is in the darkest times that the light of humanity shines the brightest,” and urged the government to enhance passenger safety through improved crowd control, technology, and infrastructure.

This isn’t Gandhi’s first outreach to railway porters. In September 2023, he visited Anand Vihar Railway Station, donning a porter’s uniform and carrying luggage to understand their struggles firsthand. Porters like Dipesh Meena voiced hope that Gandhi would address their longstanding issues, reflecting optimism about his influence. The meeting underscores Gandhi’s continued focus on amplifying the voices of working-class communities as part of his broader political engagement.
