Bypoll Results Counting Begins In Three States, Prashant Kishor Faces First Electoral Test

Counting of votes for the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar began on Monday morning, with the electoral debut of Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor emerging as the key focus of the contest. The by-election is being closely watched as Kishor attempts to challenge the BJP’s long-standing dominance in the constituency and establish his party’s presence ahead of the 2027 Bihar Assembly elections. The counting process started at 8 am amid tight security arrangements, according to officials. Early trends indicated that Prashant Kishor was leading the race, while BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha was in second place and RJD’s Rekha Gupta was trailing in third position.

The trends are subject to change as more rounds of counting take place. The Bankipur bypoll marks the first electoral contest for Kishor, a former political strategist who launched the Jan Suraaj Party with the aim of building an alternative political platform in Bihar. The high-profile election is being seen as a test of his ability to convert his political outreach and public campaigns into electoral support. A victory in Bankipur would provide a major boost to Kishor and his relatively new political organisation. It would also mark the party’s first significant electoral achievement and strengthen its position ahead of the next Bihar Assembly elections.

However, the contest presents a major challenge as the constituency has remained a BJP stronghold for nearly three decades. The by-election was necessitated after BJP national president Nitin Nabin vacated the Bankipur Assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April. Nabin had represented the constituency for five consecutive terms and secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Assembly elections by defeating RJD candidate Rekha Gupta by more than 50,000 votes. The BJP has fielded its youth wing leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha to retain the seat, while the RJD has again nominated Rekha Gupta.

Both major parties are attempting to maintain their influence in the constituency, making the contest a three-way battle with Kishor’s entry adding a new dimension to the electoral landscape. The July 30 bypoll recorded a voter turnout of 34.30%, lower than the 41.45% polling percentage recorded during the previous Assembly elections. A total of 26 candidates are contesting the election, though the main focus remains on the battle between the BJP, RJD and Jan Suraaj Party. The Bankipur constituency has historically been considered a BJP bastion.  The party has retained the seat since 1995, when the constituency was known as Patna West. Breaking that three-decade-long hold would be a significant achievement for Kishor and could reshape perceptions about the electoral potential of the Jan Suraaj Party.

For Kishor, the bypoll represents more than just a single-seat contest. After years of working behind the scenes as an election strategist for several political parties, he is now attempting to build his own political identity. The result will offer an early indication of whether his campaign style and promises can translate into voter support. The final outcome of the Bankipur bypoll is expected to have implications beyond the constituency, particularly as Bihar’s political landscape begins taking shape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. A strong performance by Kishor could increase his party’s relevance, while a BJP victory would reinforce its continued influence in one of its traditional strongholds.
