#JustIn: BPF Rejoins NDA in Assam; Charan Boro Sworn In as Minister Ahead of 2026 Polls
Bodoland People’s Front returns to NDA fold, boosting BJP’s prospects in Bodoland ahead of Assam elections.
In a pivotal development for Assam’s political landscape, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has rejoined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bolstering the coalition’s prospects for the 2026 Assembly elections. On October 18, 2025, BPF leader and Mazbat MLA Charan Boro was sworn in as a Cabinet minister in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government, taking charge of the Transport portfolio. The oath ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati and administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, saw the presence of Sarma, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief Hagrama Mohilary, and key NDA figures.
The reunion follows BPF’s landslide victory in the September 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, where it secured a majority, signaling renewed influence in the region. Chief Minister Sarma hailed Boro’s induction as a “milestone for peace in Bodoland,” emphasizing collaborative development. “I had promised to welcome BPF back to the NDA after their BTC win. We will work together for lasting peace and progress for all communities in Bodoland,” Sarma stated, crediting Mohilary’s support for the alliance’s strengthened unity.
Boro, a nine-year veteran MLA, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, calling it a “great moment” for BTR’s people. “We have full faith in the government, Hagrama sir, and the BTC’s people. Even those who supported other parties are welcome to join us,” he said, signaling an inclusive approach. Mohilary, who severed ties with the NDA in 2021 over strategic differences, reaffirmed BPF’s commitment to development, stating, “BPF has always worked for BTC’s progress. We will collaborate with the NDA to address challenges and prioritize people’s welfare, not past rivalries with groups like the United People’s Party Liberal.”

This strategic realignment consolidates the NDA’s dominance in Assam, particularly in the ethnically diverse BTR, setting the stage for a robust campaign. With the BJP and allies focusing on stability and development, the BPF’s return positions the NDA as a formidable force for the upcoming electoral battle.
