BJP’s Samik Bhattacharya Alleges Constitutional Collapse in West Bengal

Claims TMC rule fosters anarchy, shelters extremists

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Saturday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of causing a “total breakdown of constitutional machinery” in the state, alleging a complete absence of law and order.

Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Bhattacharya claimed the state has become a “haven for ISIS elements” and criminals, citing the recent arrest of suspects linked to a gangster’s murder in Patna, who were apprehended in Howrah. “Anarchy is reigning, and people want freedom from TMC rule,” he said, contrasting the state’s alleged role as a “safe passage” during Left Front rule with its current status under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Bhattacharya’s remarks echo Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at a Durgapur rally on July 18, where he accused the TMC of compromising national security through “appeasement politics” and protecting infiltrators for vote banks. The BJP has intensified its criticism ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, alleging TMC’s complicity in demographic changes via illegal migration, a claim Banerjee dismissed as “anti-Bengali propaganda.”

X posts from BJP leaders, including Amit Malviya, have similarly highlighted a “collapse of law and order,” pointing to incidents like the 2024 RG Kar rape-murder case. TMC’s Kunal Ghosh countered, accusing the BJP of defaming Bengal to distract from governance failures.

The controversy follows a National Crime Records Bureau report noting a 7% rise in West Bengal’s crime rate in 2024, with 1,12,354 cognizable offenses, though TMC claims a decline in violent crimes compared to BJP-ruled states.
