BJP Urges EC to Continue Voter Roll Revision, Rejects Mamata’s Call to Halt SIR

BJP leader urges EC to continue voter roll revision.

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari dispatched a pointed letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, fervently advocating for the resolute and uninterrupted progression of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, positioning his stance as a direct rebuttal to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's earlier demand to immediately suspend the entire exercise.

Adhikari interpreted Banerjee's strongly worded January 3 communication—wherein she decried the SIR as arbitrary, ill-prepared, and potentially leading to widespread voter disenfranchisement—as a tacit admission of impending electoral vulnerability and a desperate maneuver to preserve entrenched irregularities that have allegedly marred polls under Trinamool Congress rule.

He categorically dismissed the Chief Minister's portrayal of public distress and procedural chaos as contrived, contending that ordinary citizens across West Bengal have instead wholeheartedly welcomed the revision initiative as a long-overdue mechanism for restoring authenticity to the voter registry, effectively countering TMC's purported ecosystem of patronage and infiltration.

Adhikari underscored the robustness of preparatory measures, noting that over 50,000 Booth Level Officers and Electoral Registration Officers received comprehensive training, while defending the deployment of contemporary tools such as WhatsApp groups for real-time clarifications as pragmatic enhancements to official protocols, and rationalizing limitations on Booth-Level Agents' participation in hearings to safeguard against partisan interference.

In his concluding appeal, the senior BJP leader implored the Election Commission of India to advance the SIR with unwavering determination, bolstered by broad public endorsement, framing the process as a fundamental affirmation of constitutional democracy that will eliminate longstanding distortions, even as he accused elements within the state machinery and TMC ranks of employing intimidation and disinformation to obstruct transparent electoral reforms.
