BJP-Tipra Motha Coalition Heads into Tripura's April 12 Polls as Open Political Rivals

Tripura's BJP and Tipra Motha coalition collapses publicly ahead of April twelfth polls.

Tensions have escalated between Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma ahead of the state’s April 12 elections, signalling a bitter political clash in the tribal-dominated region. The BJP-Tipra Motha-IPFT coalition, which currently governs Tripura, is facing internal discord, with the public feud highlighting deepening divisions as nominations close in two days. Political observers say this confrontation could shape the election’s outcome.

The discord, simmering for months, took a personal turn last week when Chief Minister Saha issued a pointed attack on Pradyot, a scion of Tripura’s former royal family. Declaring that “days of royalty are over", Saha criticised Pradyot’s political role and influence in state affairs. The statement has been widely circulated in local media, generating reactions from party supporters and opponents alike.

Pradyot responded sharply, accusing the state government of undermining democratic processes. He highlighted the delay in holding ADC village council elections, which he claimed forced him to approach the Supreme Court to ensure they were conducted after a decade-long gap. The royal scion’s comments portray growing frustration over governance and the treatment of tribal institutions under the current administration.

Political analysts note that the clash underscores Tripura’s unique political landscape, where tribal identity, historical legacies, and party loyalties intersect. The emerging confrontation between Saha and Pradyot is expected to dominate campaign narratives, influencing both voter sentiment and candidate positioning in constituencies across the state.

The upcoming polls are being closely watched for how these developments affect the BJP-Tipra Motha-IPFT coalition’s cohesion. Campaign strategists suggest that the public spat may encourage voters to reconsider allegiances, especially in areas where Tipra Motha has traditionally held strong influence. Both leaders are intensifying outreach to consolidate support ahead of the elections.

With the April 12 elections fast approaching, political observers anticipate a volatile campaign period. The clash between Saha and Pradyot reflects broader questions about power dynamics, tribal representation, and governance in Tripura, making the state a focal point for observers of India’s regional politics. The coming weeks are expected to see heightened rhetoric and strategic manoeuvring as both leaders seek to assert dominance in the electoral landscape.
