BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma Named Andaman And Nicobar Lt Governor

Dinesh Sharma appointed Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, according to a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday. The appointment will take effect from the date Sharma assumes charge of the office.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan communique noted that President Droupadi Murmu had approved Sharma’s appointment as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory. The order marks a move from his current role in Parliament to an important constitutional position overseeing the administration of the island territory.

Sharma, 62, is a senior BJP leader who previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He held the position during the BJP government in the state and remained involved in the party’s political and organisational activities after moving to Parliament.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha and currently serves as its Vice Chairperson. His tenure as a Rajya Sabha member was scheduled to continue until November 25. His appointment as Lieutenant Governor will now mark a transition from his parliamentary responsibilities to the administration of the Union Territory.

The Lieutenant Governor serves as the constitutional head of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration and plays a key role in overseeing governance, public administration and implementation of policies in the strategically important Union Territory. The islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, also hold significance for India’s maritime security and regional connectivity.

Sharma’s appointment comes as the Union Territory continues to focus on infrastructure, tourism, connectivity and development while balancing these priorities with its ecological and strategic importance. He will formally take charge after assuming office, following which his tenure as Lieutenant Governor will begin.
