BJP Opposes Rahul Gandhi’s Student Protest; Saugata Roy Supports Congress Leader
Rahul Gandhi’s student protest draws sharply divided political reactions.
BJP leaders on Saturday stepped up criticism of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his recent political activities, questioning his role and responsibilities as the Lok Sabha LoP. At the same time, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy backed Gandhi’s intervention in the students’ protest and praised his efforts over the filing of an FIR in the pellet gun case.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused Gandhi of failing to discharge the responsibilities associated with the post of Leader of Opposition. Speaking in Mumbai, Singh also criticised the Opposition over the Vande Mataram issue and alleged that the matter was being used for political purposes.
In West Bengal, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also questioned Gandhi’s decision to visit other places instead of Jharkhand, where students have been protesting over issues concerning them. Ghosh argued that the protests involved students’ interests and criticised Gandhi’s absence from the state, where the issue has become a political point of contention.

BJP leader T.R. Sriniwas also targeted Gandhi over his recent intervention at the Parliament Street Police Station concerning the Jantar Mantar protest. He accused the Congress leader of engaging in what he described as intermittent political activity and questioned his approach as Leader of the Opposition.
However, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy defended Gandhi and praised his intervention in the students’ protest. Roy noted that Gandhi had participated in a prolonged protest over the issue and credited his efforts with helping lead to the registration of an FIR concerning alleged police action against the protesting students.
The contrasting reactions reflect the political divide over Gandhi’s recent activities. While BJP leaders have questioned his conduct and responsibilities as Leader of the Opposition, the Trinamool Congress has backed his intervention on behalf of protesting students and presented the FIR as a significant outcome of his protest.
